The legend that was Gary Charles
Has to be up there as THE worst player Redknapp ever bought.

Bought from Benfice with a dodgy knee and a serious drinking problem, he played a massive 6 times for us in three years.

It only gets better after his career finished:

"After the end of his playing career, Charles struggled with alcoholism. He was twice imprisoned — first for drunken driving and soon afterwards for cutting off his electronic tag to go on holiday to the Costa del Sol.
In September 2005, he was arrested and convicted for assaulting a woman in a taxi office in Clay Cross, north east Derbyshire.
After the jury was unable to reach a verdict, a retrial was ordered. Between the trials Charles was jailed for turning up to court drunk. At the later hearing, he admitted he had an on-going drink problem. He was subsequently fined and given a suspended sentence and a community service order.

Charles was jailed for 12 months in December 2006 after committing a public order offence whilst serving his suspended sentence"

And who can forget being found pissed in his car with his own shit smeared all over the interior. Nice.

Quick question - Who was the agent invloved in the deal to bring him to West Ham?

Pretty sad story.

Re: The legend that was Gary Charles
Was a decent player at Forest.
If the referee has done his job and sent off the nutcase Gascoigne he would have won the FA Cup as would Brian Clough.
Things may have been different in both these sad stories.
As usual all evil in the world stems from Tottenham Hotspur.

Gazza went off on a stretcher so he was as good as sent off anyway.

I think Sven is referring to the chest high stamp on Garry Parker.

Re: The legend that was Gary Charles
Tottenham retained 11 players and came back to win.
1-0 down and 10 men it wouldn't have happened.
Diabolical refereeing. The tackle on Charles was a yellow at least and the one where he put his studs in someone's chest was a nailed on straight red.

Re: The legend that was Gary Charles
I'd agree that he was the worst signing made for us by 'Arry, and that's saying something when you look at the list of has-been's he brought in. It was obvious to me at the time that Redknapp could not have seen him play recently and must have done a deal with a dodgy agent. The guy was a fucking disgrace and Redknapp must have realised from the day the bloke turned up that he'd made a monumental rickett.

Any Old Iron, I don't think Redknapp senior gave much of a fuck after the transfer had gone through.

Re: The legend that was Gary Charles
I'll see your Gary Charles and raise you, a ROB JONES.

Back in the day when Redknapp still let people turn up at the training ground and watch, I went over there with my old man and we'd just signed the ex- England international fullback.

Imagine our surprise to see our new signing HOBBLING AROUND ON ON CRUTCHES.

"He joined West Ham United, on non-contract terms, on 17 July 1999, and featured for them in a single Intertoto Cup game and featured in his second and what would be his final professional career match for West Ham United which lasted 45 minutes as a result of re-aggravating his knee, he retired shortly after this."
